Ellie awakes on a school day and quickly remembers that she has forgotten her history homework. She imagines the blood shot eyes of Mr Flamingo growing wide with dissaproval. Thus starts the Elephants Day Off – a story about how something that starts out badly can turn out rather well.

Ellie's very large brain started to churn. How was she going to solve this problem? Suddenly she looked down at her arm. What was that curious spot?
Ellie's parents were getting ready for work when they heard her call out. They look at the spot and wonder what it might be.
Having Ellie stay home from school alone was not an option. Her parents had a conference to decide what to do.
Papa elephant called into work. He remembered that he had a light work load and might be able to take a vacation day.
The ordinary routine was out the window. Since a stay at home day might be a movie day, Mama made a snack.
The elephant parents decided a little TV wouldn't hurt. Later they could exercise and make projects out of balsa wood.
As immigrants, the elephant family sometimes missed the simple life and values they left behind in the old country.
Ellie was having fun getting airplane rides from papa. What a great day this turned out to be. She had forgotten all about her curious spot.
Suddenly there is a knock on the door. The parents have a conference to decide what to do.
The elephants carefully peer out and see the hockey stick head of Mr Flamingo, his large eyes studying the house for any movement.
If Mr Flamingo could here what they were saying, he might have been pleased. But, he would have to wait until tomorrow to find out what happened on the elephants day off.
